David Gately tips: Best bets for Caulfield Cup and The Everest day

It’s a massive day of racing not only with the richest turf race in the world, but the time-honoured Caulfield Cup. And expert tipster David Gately thinks the winner might pay a good price. See his best bets.

Favourites draw wide for Caulfield Cup

Can the locals mix it with the internationals?

It promises to be a massive Saturday of racing.

In Melbourne we have the running of the Group 1 Caulfield Cup over 2400m — one of the great form races ahead of the Melbourne Cup.

The race has become a real challenge for punters, with the influx of star international quality. Time will tell if the locals can hold off the international wave.

Meanwhile, further north, we have arrived at the foot of The Everest for the world’s richest race on turf.

A field of 12 will face the starter and 10 of them are Group 1 winners. What a race!

TRACK PATTERNS

Ratings for Caulfield are for good track. Rail is in the true position as it was last Saturday when the track played very well. The rail was out 10m mid-week and again, there was no bias evident.

Ratings for Randwick are for good track. The rail is true — it was out 6m from the 1600m to the winning post last week and the track played well. The rail was last true here on September 21 and there was no track pattern that day.

GATOR’S BEST BETS

GROUP 1 CAULFIELD CUP (Caulfield — Race 9, 5.15pm)

VOW AND DECLARE — Very good return in a slowly-run Turnbull. Was warming up nicely late and he will be better suited at 2400m in a handicap off a genuine speed. He thrashed older horses in Queensland last prep and can measure up here at a nice price.

GROUP 3 MOONGA STAKES (Caulfield — Race 8, 4.30pm)

DESERT LORD — Held his ground in the Group 1 Epsom. Set a fast speed prior and beat all-bar Kolding and Fierce Impact, who both then won Group 1 races. His last three dry track-runs have all been wins with the aggregate winning margin 9.6 lengths.

GROUP 3 SYDNEY STKS (Randwick — Race 6, 3.25pm)

BRUTAL — Controlled the race outside the speed fresh and was too strong. He has a nice mix of class and courage. He would not be out of place in The Everest and can win this.

THE EVEREST (Randwick — Race 7, 4.15pm)

ARCADIA QUEEN — Potential superstar. She has tasted defeat only once and made a brilliant Sydney debut last month, winning in fast time. If she can cope with a fast-run 1200m, she will be powering home.

OTHER RACES:

GOTHIC STAKES (LISTED) (Caulfield — Race 3, 1.25pm)

HILO — Beat Group 1-placed Southbank before finishing with subsequent Caulfield Guineas winner Super Seth last time in a race dominated up front. Back a notch here. Go well.

GROUP 3 ETHEREAL STAKES (Caulfield — Race 6, 3.10pm)

VEGAS JEWEL — Jumped quickly to 1600m at just start two at The Valley last start and rounded them up before winning going away. She ran a strong last 600m overall time and will eat 2000m. Promising.

THE KOSCIUSZKO (Randwick — Race 5, 2.50pm)

VICTOREM — Resumes. Lovely trial. Probably should have beaten the Group 1 competitive Viridine when fresh last prep. Beaten in this race last year but struck a heavy track that day. The one to beat.

ST LEGER STAKES (Randwick — Race 9, 5.30pm)

NEUFBOSC — A current emergency for the Caulfield Cup and a great value play if they end up running here. He was poleaxed last start, so forget that run. He closed off nicely prior when finishing with one of the favourites in this race in Gallic Chieftain and now meets him better at the weights. Looks way over the odds.
