Craig Newitt booked for classy 3YO in Cox Plate, but needs bold showing in Caulfield Guineas

Craig Newitt will be praying quality colt Glenfiddich runs a bold race in the Caulfield Guineas to ensure he gets to ride the classy three-year-old in the Cox Plate.

Jockey Craig Newitt will take a keen interest in Saturday week’s Caulfield Guineas even if he doesn’t secure a ride in the $2 million event.

Newitt will be watching the performance of Stutt Stakes winner Glenfiddich because he has been booked to ride the promising colt if he runs in the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on October 24.

Luke Nolen will be aboard the Peter Moody-trained Glenfiddich in the Caulfield Guineas but won’t be able to ride the three-year-old at 49.5kg in the Cox Plate.

“Pete is happy for me to ride him and I’m very happy to be on him because I think he’ll be a great chance,” Newitt said.

Glenfiddich ran third against the older horses with Newitt aboard in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield first-up before the son of Fastnet Rock won the Group 2 Stutt Stakes at The Valley.

Newitt said Glenfiddich gave him every indication he would be competitive in a Cox Plate during the Memsie Stakes.

“He’s definitely high class and he showed me he was probably top shelf in the Memsie,” Newitt said.

“He’s only going to improve as he gets into preparation now he has had those couple of runs back.

“He was really good first-up and he was just too good for them second-up and he’ll improve into the Guineas as well.

“The 2000m will be perfect for him. He relaxes really well and goes forward easily, he’s a really good type.”

Glenfiddich is on the third line of Caulfield Guineas betting at $7 while the colt is a $17 chance in TAB’s Cox Plate market.
