IT’S been a “life-changing” year for Guy Feeney.

He got married, bought property, changed careers and capped it off by pocketing $50,000 as NRL SuperCoach championpresented by hipages.

However, the 30-year-old admits his SuperCoach obsession nearly got in the way of it all.

“It was nearly the shortest marriage in history,” Feeney said.

“Kristy and I just got married this year. She said if I was in the top three we’d be able to watch the football on the screen at the reception. But I was only coming ninth at the time, so I missed watching the footy and that week I dropped to 28th.”

HORROR STORY: Split second decision cost me $50k

Recovering from that setback, the Feeneys rode every move in the final round and his side Munsters Inc eventually prevailed by just six points, the tightest finish in SuperCoach history.

“It was very nerve racking,” said Kristy. “I felt sick to the stomach. I was sure he’d come second so I was happy with $5K. So when I saw it refresh on my screen that he’d come first, I burst into tears and couldn’t stop shaking.”

Guy, a former policeman who is now finishing studies to become a primary schoolteacher, had to wait a little longer for the good news.

“I was at school in the middle of a maths lesson so I couldn’t get to my phone, but I could feel it vibrating in my pocket,” he said. “I was like ‘come on, hurry up, I need to get to lunch and check this.’”

Guy is now the toast of the town among his students.

“There are a few boys in year six, they know what’s going on so they think I’m the coolest thing since sliced bread,” he said. “I’m trying to teach my year two class that $50,000 has four zeros at the end.”

The $50,000 is a welcome injection of funds for the newlyweds.

“We have purchased a block of land and this money is life changing, we can now build our house,” Kristy said.

But Guy has other ideas: “I’m trying to get at least 10 per cent of it. I’ve got a SuperCoach group I’m part of and the boys helped out a fair bit during the year, so I wanted to take some cash for them.”

BUY OF THE YEAR

“I had a few good picks with Blake Ferguson and Valentine Holmes, but one that stands out is Peni Terepo. It was a risky buy at the time, but he found a few attacking stats and helped me jump up to Angus Crichton.”

CRUCIAL TRADE

“Cameron Munster was out of the final round, which was a bit of a shame given my team name Munsters Inc. So I brought in Milford and I wasn’t particularly happy with that choice. But he got a try assist in the first few minutes and it all got better from there (Milford ended with 82). That was one game I was very nervous about towards the end.”

DUD OF THE YEAR

“I was telling everyone who would listen that Bryce Cartwright was no good at the start of the year. But the percentage of ownership made me bring him in, I was too scared I’d be left behind if he actually went off.”

TIGHT FINISH

“I was watching the games and noticing the guy in fourth. Looking at his team, he had Will Hopoate and Cody Walker (who both had big weekends). I was seeing his scores as the weekend was going by and I was like ‘this is all over’, hoping I was a chance for the $5,000 for second place. But it turns out I just scraped home.”
