NRL SuperCoach: Split second decision cost me $50,000 prize

SPARE a thought for Matt Paul, whose split second mistake cost him the $50,000 major prize in NRL SuperCoach.

SPARE a thought for Matt Paul, whose split second mistake cost him the $50,000 major prize in NRL SuperCoach — presented by hipages.

Matt coached his team Goddo to a fourth-place NRL SuperCoach finish, but was left lamenting what could have been after missing a planned squad change right on lockout.

Matt ended up with $1,000 for fourth instead of $50,000 for first, costing himself $49,000.

“That feeling when you decide to swap Walker in for Munster but it’s five seconds too late and you’re already locked out, which costs you the $50,000 and 1st place in SuperCoach. Feeling gutted,” Matt wrote on the NRL SuperCoach Addicts Facebook page.

For those scratching your heads, this is how it all broke down:

• Matt finished fourth on 28,291 points, 111 points behind first place;

• Matt had planned to switch Cody Walker and Cameron Munster, before trading Ryan James to Andrew Fifita to match someone in a grand final head-to-head;

• After being locked out from his Walker-Munster switch (late by “five seconds”) and missing out on Walker’s 130 points, Matt burned his last trade to flick Munster and bring in Luke Keary for 48 points;

• If you minus Keary’s 48 and James’ 51 points from Matt’s overall score and add in Walker’s 130 points and Fifita’s 85 points he would have ended up on 28,407 - enough to claim first place and $50,000 by just five points.

OUCH!

Eventual winner Guy Feeney, coach of Munsters Inc, is $50,000 richer after prevailing in the closest finish in SuperCoach history.

After an entire season, just six points separated Munsters Inc from second-placed Brett Gilly, coach of Gils Front Runners.
