Broncos Challenge schoolboy rugby league grand final action will see five grand finals over the next 48 hours – including two today.

Easts Carina is be the venue for three grand finals this week – today’s Broncos Old Boys Cup (Year 7) and Renouf Shield (Year 8) deciders and Wednesday’s Langer Reserves (Open).

Attention then swings to Pizzy Park on the Gold Coast on Wednesday with two local derbies featuring PBC SHS v Keebra Park SHS in both the Walters (year 10) and Hancock Cup (year 9) grand finals.

REPLAY: NRL Schoolboy Cup Grand Final: Year 7, Marsden SHS v Ipswich SHS

THE MATCHES

Marsden SHS has another trophy heading its way after the Year 7 Broncos Old Boys clash went their way over Ipswich SHS by 44-12.

Marsden dominated possession and dominated the opening 20 minutes, racing to a 28-nil lead before Ipswich hooker Jaylan Naleba burrowed over.

It was only the third time in 18 minutes Ipswich had possession of the ball and no side could have held Marsden SHS with the mood the side was in.

Centre Chris Vaimili, crossed twice, on the second occasion benefiting from nice work by edge backrower Storm Enoka, No. 11, while left winger Kyedon Ashley flashed onto an intercept to score.

Enoka then started the second half with a flourish for his side, scoring minutes into the half.

With Tipessa Lee delivered rolled gold ball from the ruck, halves Boston Barnard and Z J Watene feasted, either bringing their power players onto the ball, or igniting enterprising play themselves.

Although well beaten, it is always a milestone for a team to make a grand final and the journey to today’s clash will benefit this young Ipswich SHS side.

In the Renouf ShieldYear 8 grand final, Palm Beach Currumbin SHS claimed a drama charged premiership 8-4.

PBC SHS jumped in elation when the fulltime siren sounded, while Marsden SHS players slumped to the ground in disappointment.

PBC SHS offered three cheers for their rivals in a show of respect.

In a dramatic finale:

+ Marsden survived defending with 12 men for 10 minutes earlier in the half, then crossed to score to reduce the scoreline to 8-4.

+ PBC SHS backrower Nelson Makaafi made a try saving tackle on Marsden SHS’s Madden Falaniko

+ Marsden SHS edge forward Reece Gorman crossed under the posts - but lost the ball under a sea of PBC defenders

Inspired by go forward prop Marlie Barry and ball playing middle Brodie Saunders, PBC dominated the first half, with tall left edge powerhouse Kwinn Wolf twice crossing for tries to lead 8-nil at halftime, but Marsden SHS ramped up their game and started shading their rivals.

Marsden scored through fullback Zechariah Tuialii who accepted a blindside ball off Mace Andrew. That try cut PBC’s lead to 8-4.

There was a huge moment in the second half when PBC SHS winger Jonah Harris made a try saving tackle on a runaway Andrew after Caleb Cresswell had put Gorman away down the middle.

Harris tackled Andrew – and then made another two tackles in the set of six as Marsden SHS attacked the line.

It was the type of desperation which wins grand finals.

PBC coach Geoff Eggert said he was proud of his side because they first had to qualify for the competition, and then to beat Marsden was a big effort as they were the bench mark all season.

In the first half PBC halves Tom Batchelor and Taj Lateo expertly guided their side around as PBC strangled the opposition.

Indeed Marsden SHS did well to reduce PBC’s lead, so dominate were the Gold Coast side, with Ned Tanner denied by Marsden winger Naiparee Sabadi after the PBC centre looked certain to cross.
