Queensland club Mermaids has swept the first week of competition, claiming all four gold medals up for grabs in the girls’ under 14 and 18 green and gold divisions.

And Sydney University Lions took two of the three boys titles on offer. Melbourne club Richmond Tigers (14B Green) was the only other club to win on grand final day.

Toby Fitzgerald, coach of the undefeated U14 Mermaids Blue side believes the results are a testament to the club and the girls’ commitment.

“The girls who are in those championship-winning teams have been training hard in the 12 months leading up to this,” he said.

“We haven’t really stopped training or rolling for anything.”

While the Mermaids’ two top division teams were expected to go far in the tournament, Fitzgerald said the all-round success was a shock.

“In the two top divisions we were sort of hoping for it, and were prepared for it, but going four-from-four medals is just definitely unexpected.”

The U18 Gold was an undoubted highlight though.

Both teams went into the game undefeated, but Mermaids Pink were the ones to follow through, downing their American rivals 9-7 to claim gold.

Pink were leading by just a single goal heading into the halftime break, and Phoebe Fredericks said her coaches urged

“We’re all very competitive and we can pretty easily get out of tempo, but our coaches calmed us down completely and we all just reassured ourselves of the work we all put in from the weeks of training leading up.”

Fredericks’ goal scoring haul of four was the difference for Pink - and she said victory was an amazing moment.

“Given it’s our last time, it’s just like every year has come together and we’ve won the final year. It makes everyone over the moon.”

Meanwhile, an undefeated hometown club and a team with a point to prove resulted in a massive Under 18 boys final, with the visiting Sydney Uni Lions taking down UWA Torpedoes 11-6.

Back-to-back goals from the Lions’ Zac Izzard gave the team a lead the Torpedoes were just unable to catch.

Despite the Lions leading 7-4 at half time, Izzard said the mindset is the same as the beginning of the match.

“We always just say it’s 0-0 we just act like that’s the score, we keep playing with the same intensity and not get complacent even though we’re up.”

The action was red-hot on Friday.

Despite recording an amazing five goals, Izzard insisted it was a team effort.

“Full credit to the team, we just fought all the way to the end.”

Earlier, the Mermaids U14 Green team kicked off the day with an impressive 6-1 over AHS White before their U14 Gold team followed up a few hours later to beat UTS Balmain Tigers in a thriller, 4-3.

Laura McKinnon scored two for the Mermaids in the U14 Green decider with Lulu Lochran , Alysha Korsincsky, Lucy Scott and Charlotte Perry also all scoring goals.

Both sides in the U14 Gold decider struggled to find the back of the net due to tight defence, along with some offensive fouls.

Pink’s Poppy Lochran scored an incredible three goals, and said the 14-5 result was all down to teamwork.

“We basically spent everyday for like a month together working for this moment and it just feels so amazing.” Poppy said.

“We knew we were going to fight to get it, but we had no idea we were going to get this far.”

Richmond Tigers defeated Melville Gold 13–7 to take out the 14 boys Green division while Sydney University Lions pulled off a great win over Sydney Northern Beaches Breakers in the Gold division.

Gus Callaghan was the star of the Green show with an extraordinary eight goals.

The young Lions won their match 8-6 in a fantastic exhibition of finals water polo.

Sebastian Atra said the result was “brilliant’’ and came at the end of a tough match-up.

“It was a really tight game and we expected that,’’ he said.

“We were down at the start but we managed to come back in the second quarter.

“I think what helped us is our mateship. We all play together a lot and we play as a team not as individuals.

“This is a massive win for us.’’
