Langer coaches choose the opposition’s dangermen

The Langer Trophy coaches have peered over the back fence to reveal which opposition player they rate No. 1 danger man – and one of them turns out to be a Broncos signing.

The Langer Trophy coaches have peered over the back fence to reveal which opposition player they rate No. 1 danger man.

And one of them is Coby Black, the Marsden SHS halfback signed by the Broncos whose junior club was the Helensvale Hornets.

The revelation comes after round 2 in the competition – a split round which started Tuesday with Wavell hosting Mabel Park, and continued on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Courier-Mail, along with News Corp affiliates, will stream every match from the opens division this season on the KommunityTV platform. Round 1 is Tuesday.

So who do the eight coaches rate highest from opposition teams?

And who is the player they coached which brings them the most satisfaction?

Peter Norman (Keebra Park SHS)

Best opposition danger man:

Coby Black (Marsden SHS) had a really good year last year as a 16-year-old and played strongly for Marsden. So with another year and more experience, he will be one to watch out for.’’

A player they have coached who brings them great satisfaction:

Briton Nikora (Cronulla). I coached him in my first year at Keebra Park. He played the whole season in my Langer Reserves that season, and never played a game (of Langer Trophy). He went down to Cronulla to trial and he has earned his whole way.

Joshua Bretherton (Ipswich SHS)

Biggest opposition dangermen: “Coby Black (Marsden SHS) is going to be a danger. A lot of people will be saying that. He’s a quality footballer. He’s proved that multiple times, particularly what he did as a 16-year-old in the under 18s Queensland team last year.

“And Jett Bryce (Keebra Park) is going to be excellent. He is a hard working backrower and is going to be really important for Keebra.’’

A player they have coached who brings them great satisfaction: “It isvery difficult to single out anyone, but the most recent would be Gabe Satrick (Melbourne Storm) from last year. His story was excellent. He came to us as an unknown, from a small community in Yarrabah and over two years with us he made massive improvements, going from a small town kid to someone on pretty much everybody’s radar. He earned that through hard work.

Caleb Jacksonlast year as well, who had been with us for years. He was always an elite footballer, but a player who flies under the radar because he does the little things well. He’s gone into a Redcliffe system where he has already played Queensland Cup. That’s huge. People don’t play that at that age. We are immensely proud of him, because he did that as a tradesman-like player.

Tim Maccan (PBC SHS)

Biggest opposition dangermen: “I think this year there's talk about Coby Black. He played a great role there last year, has made the Under 18 Origin squad so I think he's someone you got to watch out for.

Keebra’s halfback Ryder Williams is also going really well and their captain Wailer Whaiapu, he is a very strong player. They are key figures who will be good.

A player they have coached who brings them great satisfaction: Toby Sexton (Titans). He was a really hard worker when he was in Year 7. 8, 9, never getting selected in those representative teams. He had to work hard on his craft and he’s done really well. He’s starting to play some good footy.

And at the moment, Jake Lateo’s development from his younger years to now. He had a strong year for Tweed as captain and halfback, and he guided the Langer Reserve team to a premiership last year. His development has really come on. He’s a great kicker, defender, reads the game really well. It’s pleasing seeing him push for a starting role and leadership role in our team this year.

A player they have coached who brings them great satisfaction:

A player whose progress gives you the most satisfaction: Hayden Potts. Our No. 9, he’s been with us since Year seven and is now our captain. A worker, who is one of the most coachable players, always listening and engaged. Everything right on and off the field. He has earned his elevation to captain.
