Hulking Mabel SHS prop Alex Leapai Jnr, son of heavyweight boxing legend Alex, put Mabel Park SHS on his shoulders in a round 1 Langer Trophy spectacle against Redcliffe SHS on Tuesday.
The Titans-signed 17-year-old, who would fit right in in a land of giants (193cm and 115kg), led the way with a hat-trick as his side captured win No.1 by way of a 34-20 thriller.
Mabel SHS assistant coach Joey Crompton-Meyer said Leapai just led from the front.
“He has such a big heart. If he leads the boys will follow. It’s good we’ve got him.”
“One hundred percent” Crompton-Meyer said about Leapai having a hat-trick in his arsenal at all times.
“He did it at the state carnival last week for Met East and then he made Queensland.
“He’s a special kid. And a great kid as well. Really humble and hard working. It’s sad this is our last year with him, to be honest. He’s been with us since Year Seven. To see where he’s come from to where he is now. I’m very proud.”
Earlier, the Walters Cup competition returned with a bang, with Mabel Park SHS and Redcliffe SHS fighting out a thrilling 22-all draw.

The son of former world boxing contender Alex Leapai Snr, the towering prop won’t shirk the workload when the whips start cracking in the elite schoolboys competition.
He will be key to Mabel Park’s hopes of going further in the Langer Trophy than they ever have before.
But he is far from the only player you should be keeping your eyes on in KommunityTV’s exclusive coverage.
Watch for Redcliffe five-eighth John Fineanganofo and Mabel Park centre Jaycob Kingston-Francis - but you will have to be quick.
The two young guns have pace to burn and skill beyond their ages.
Fineanganofo, who has been contracted to the Dolphins Academy, has creativity seeping out of every pore.
So exciting a prospect, Redcliffe coach Jay Wilkinson is just excited he gets to watch it first hand.
“He is outstanding,’’ Wilkinson said. “I am just super excited for what his future brings for him. He’s a great kid.’’
Kingston-Francis, who is Raiders bound, has moved to the centres this season to add some punch to the Mabel Park edges.
But don’t expect him to be a step behind his rivals on the pace side.
Kingston-Francis was named as part of News Corp’s Meninga Cup team of the season and for good reason.
