MEET THE CAPTAINS

Marsden SHS

Captain: Coby Black

Junior club: Helensvale Hornets.

NRL club supported growing up: Brisbane Broncos.

First rugby league memory: Scoring a fair few tries. I don’t score as many anymore but back in the day I ran in a couple tries a game.

Favourite player growing up: Andrew Johns and Cooper Cronk. I model my game off both of them. Andrew has that flash and Cooper has that get the job done mindset.

NRL affiliation: Broncos until end of 2025 and joining the top team at end of the year.

Who is a teammate you’d least like to be tackled by: Lewis Symonds. He is a big strong boy who is just so strong. He is not massive but he lifts heavy weights and hits hard.

Most annoying teammate:Jacob Tinsley: He’s a bit of everything and Kylem Vunipola never stops talking. Great blokes, great banter, but pests at times.

Opposition player you most admire:Karl Oloapu. I have been a good mate of his for a long time and it’s massive for him to get a start. Its amazing. And there’s some boys that will shake up the competition. Oliva Iaulualo (Ipswich SHS) is a big strong boy, Alex (Laepai, Mabel Park) is massive.

First memory of school: First memory was at Coombabah SHS, playing as a Year 7 against a Year 9 Forest Lake team. They were monsters, we were scrawny and they were huge. I’ve never been ran over so hard in my life.

Favourite memory of your time at school: There’s so many, there's a good bunch of boys around us all. The squad we have this year, I've never seen the boys get so close from one little camp to the Gold Coast. Everything's coming together nicely.

Wavell SHS

Captain: Lauloto Salei

Junior club: Norths Devils for the past four years. I came here (Brisbane) from Alice Springs … then was lucky enough to come here to Wavell.

NRL club you supported growing up: The Roosters. Dad’s just always gone for them so I jumped on the bandwagon. I still go for them.

First rugby league memory: I first started off as a halfback so I just loved to manage stuff. From there I fell in love with the game and the aggression. At lock I can still involve myself.

NRL affiliation: Raiders at the moment. The contract is until the end of this year. It’s everyone's dream to make it to the big stage of the NRL. I am happy with the pace I am moving at. I played through the Meninga Cup, then I was lucky enough to have a run in Colts (for Norths). Hopefully (Q) Cup soon enough. I am a firm believer in going into a club with a good development system – I think that’s where players build their worth.

Who is a teammate you’d least like to be tackled by: Nazareth Taua. He has very big shoulders and is good in contact. You wouldn’t want to do that.

Most annoying teammate: Christian Tuala. He is a short little man, always barking, in the gym and on the field. Once you hear a bark you know he is near.

Opposition player you most admire: Karl Oloapu: I was fortunate enough to play alongside him last year. I think he’s a great role model for the players coming up. He’s got a great story and he’s going so well. He left a big impact on Wavell. He set the standards high with the way he presents himself. He sets the bar high in terms of how you should be acting on and off the field.

First memory of school: The first homecoming at Wavell SHS in Year 10. We got the win as well against Coombabah.

Favourite memory of your time at school: Our final game last year in the Langer Trophy. We did a big training session, all the boys got around each other. It was a great memory with the Year 12s who are now onto other things.

Ipswich SHS

Captain: Oliva Iaulualo

Junior club: West End Bulldogs, then Swifts Bluebirds. Then Goodna Eagles.

NRL club you supported growing up: Manly Sea Eagles because I always looked up to Steve Matai because of how hard he hit. Now obviously Bulldogs.

First rugby league memory: The thing I enjoy most about league is the physicality.

Favourite player growing up: Steve Matai and Sonny Bill Williams. Sonny Bill because growing up Dad told me that’s the player I want to be because of my size. I try to be like him, model my game off him … analyse what he does. He’s such a freak.

NRL affiliation: Bulldogs contracted until early 2025. I will play SG ball and hopefully I am good enough to play Jersey Flegg.

Who is a teammate you’d least like to be tackled by: Iosefa Kolio. He’s got good technique, he knows how to get under the ball well so running it straight just isn’t a good idea against him. You will get whacked.

Most annoying teammate: Jeriah Vagana. He’s good with energy but he talks a lot. A bit too much.

Opposition player you most admire: Coby Black is pretty good. I played with him in the Titans Academy before I went to the Bulldogs. We had a game and he was freakish.

First memory of school: Just playing footy with my mates in a small school in Bundamba.

Favourite memory of your time at school: Had to be winning the National Schoolboys Cup. Winning Langer was very emotional, making it to that stage for the first time as a school. But National Schoolboys was once in a lifetime.

Redcliffe SHS

Captain: Hayden Potts

Junior club: Redcliffe Dolphins

NRL club you supported growing up: Brisbane but now the Dolphins

First rugby league memory: I used to go to my dad’s footy games when I was younger. I have always been around footy my whole life.

Favourite player growing up: Cameron Smith

Who is a teammate you’d least like to be tackled by: Loka Toia. He is hard hitting.

Most annoying teammate: Reggie O’Connell. He loves getting into the boys.

Opposition player you most admire: Zac Herdegan. I have played with him and against him and some of the stuff he does is so skilLful.

Favourite memory of your time at school: Just being around the boys with the excellence program.

Caloundra SHS

Captain: Tully McLellan

First rugby league memory: T.

Favourite player growing up: Ben Barba

NRL affiliation: Melbourne

Who is a teammate you’d least like to be tackled by: Zac Garton. He is a big fella.

Most annoying teammate: Chase Paterson – he is an absolute pest

Opposition player you most admire: I can’t really put it down to one, but I came across a few good ones in the Meninga Cup who I admire.

First memory of school: I remember when I came to Caloundra SHS I got made to do a dance.

Favourite memory of your time at school: Making the Langer Trophy recently for the first time, but also winning the Gee Shield.

Mabel Park SHS

Captain: Alex Leapai

Junior club: Logan Brothers

NRL club you supported growing up: Canberra Raiders

Favourite player growing up: Josh Papalii, my uncle

NRL affiliation: Gold Coast

Who is a teammate you’d least like to be tackled by: Naziah Patuua

Opposition player you most admire: Coby Black

Favourite memory of your time at school: Meeting my first group of friends and playing with them now, including Elijah Tagiilimal.
