A polar blast is coming for Melbourne. It was expected to be bad on Cup day, but it’s suddenly looking outright bleak.

Melbourne Cup forecasted to be the coldest in 27 years

The weather forecast for the 2022 Melbourne Cup is for rain to wreak havoc at Flemington Racecourse.

With the Bureau of Meteorology predicting snowfall in parts of Victoria and NSW, the polar blast is also expecting to visit Melbourne on Cup Day.

The latest BOM forecast shows there is a 95 per cent chance for showers with predictions of up to 15mm of rain.

It gets worse.

The BOM says there is a chance of a thunderstorms and small hail in the late afternoon and evening.

It’s going to be chilly in Melbourne with a low of 8C and a top of 14C.

Those lucky enough to attend the Melbourne Cup this year will need to dress for the conditions and an umbrella should be a mandatory accessory.

Punters.com.au reports the expected 2022 Melbourne Cup track conditions are for a Soft 7.

Authorities have rated the track on how well it holds up underfoot, be it damp, firm or somewhere in between and do so for every single race meeting held across the country.

The Racing Victoria edict is that all tracks should have a ‘GOOD’ rating, so that no horses are harmed by a hard racing surface. As a result, irrigation is widely used to dampen the track.

According to BOM senior forecaster Tim Bolden, the hottest Melbourne Cup Day was in 1902 when the temperature reached 35C in the city.

In 2017, it was only 14.4C when the Melbourne Cup jumped at 3:00pm. In 2022, it could be colder than that with forecasts of an icy first few days in November being made.
