Betting guide to 2022 Melbourne Cup: This is how an expert bets on Cup Day

The options of where to throw your dosh on Melbourne Cup Day are too infinite to choose from so our experts have worked it out for you.

Melbourne Cup 101: Tips for once-a-year punters

The Melbourne Cup has rolled around again and that means it‘s time for a nation to have a punt.

This year’s race resembles an old school race with the field mostly made up by locally-trained gallopers with a few international raiders thrown in and heading up the market.

The favourite is a horse called Deauville Legend and it’s trained by a young Pom named James Ferguson who has form around Aussie racing, punters.com.au reports.

Ferguson is the son of John Ferguson, the former chief executive of Godolphin, and in 2017 the 33-year-old travelled to Australia as the travelling foreman for Charlie Appleby when he won the Sydney Cup with Polarisation.

Deauville Legend is a Northern Hemisphere-bred three-year-old, listed in Australia as a four-year-old, and in recent years Rekindling (2017) and Cross Counter (2018) won the Melbourne Cup as Northern Hemisphere three-year-olds.

Deauville Legend goes into this year’s Melbourne Cup after winning the Great Voltigeur at York in the UK back in August, the race Cross Counter finished second in prior to his Melbourne Cup win.

Behind Deauville Legend in third was El Bodegon, which finished a close third in the Cox Plate behind Anamoe on October 22 so the form has been franked in Australia.

Three-time Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy takes the reins aboard Deauville Legend and the horse will be hard to beat if he runs to his best form.

Of the locals, the best chances appear to be Gold Trip and Montefilia and at longer odds Duais and Stockman.

Gold Trip is only the winner of one race but his recent performances, second in the Caulfield Cup and his unlucky ninth in the Cox Plate, commands respect.

The Caulfield Cup and the Cox Plate have proved the most successful lead-up races since 2000, producing five winners each.

Montefilia was the eye-catching runner out of the Caulfield Cup. She ran fifth but arguably should have finished in the placings.

Her last 200m of 11.80 seconds was the best of the race and the seventh best of the race meeting, an amazing achievement considering the Caulfield Cup is run over an energy sapping 2400m.

Duais has a few things going for her heading into Tuesday, including being trained by a Cummings, Edward, the grandson of the legendary Bart Cummings.

The daughter of Shamus Award, it’s fair to say, has raced below expectations this spring after she was a dominant winner of the Australian Cup and Tancred Stakes at weight-for-age during the autumn.

But it should be noted this whole preparation has been about the Melbourne Cup and she was doing her best work late in the Caulfield Cup when sixth.

Also gets a jockey change on Tuesday with Winx’s jockey Hugh Bowman jumping into the saddle.

Stockman is a Kiwi-bred galloper that has two-miles written all over him.

Trained by Sydneysider Joe Pride, he won the St Leger at Randwick two starts back and he was warming up nicely on Saturday in the Rosehill Gold Cup.

He is Group 1 placed at weight-for-age over 2400m which shows his class and if the heavens open on Tuesday, his chances are enhanced.

Typically miserable Melbourne weather is going to do its best to ruin the event with 10mm of rain set to hit Melbourne on Tuesday, serving up a soft or heavy track.

The 162nd running of the iconic handicap race is set to get underway at 3pm (AEDT) on Tuesday November 1 and can be watched on Channel 10.
