If you don't mind, umpire - the most controversial umpiring calls of the AFL finals

RICHMOND'S 50m frenzy, Eddie Betts gets lucky and Freo's tough run on the road. The most controversial umpiring calls of week one finals.

WE PICK the biggest umpiring eyebrow-raisers of the weekend.

Each week we'll nominate the most controversial, baffling and unusual umpiring calls - all the interests of raising issues of rule interpretation so important to our game.

You can have a say by leaving a comment below or joining the debate on Facebook and Twitter.

If you've seen an incident we missed, let us know. And if we get an explanation from AFL House, we'll put that up here as well.

TIGERS' 50m FRENZY

Richmond kicked seven goals in the second quarter at the MCG yesterday, and amazingly three of them came via 50m penalties.

50m (1): Chris Newman has the ball on the wing when the umpire blows the whistle after Kade Simpson floors Jack Riewoldt with a bump in the centre square. Newman is brought to 35m out and kicks the goal.

50m (2): Another off-the-ball incident. This time Andrew Walker is pinged for holding while Aaron Edwards is looking for a target on the opposite wing. He also goals after the man on the mark is pulled back to within range.

50m (3): This was the most obvious of the three, but that didn't make Carlton fans any happier. Andrew McInnes has a brain fade and runs right next to Jack Riewoldt after he takes a mark in the centre square. He also commits the cardinal sin of putting his arm up inside the protected area. Riewoldt converts from 30m.

GIVE ROBBO A RULE BOOK

The Blues copped it again early in the last quarter when Ivan Maric kicked another goal from a free kick, this time for the rare offence of deliberately rushing a behind. Mitch Robinson lept over Maric at a ball up in the goalsquare and thumped the ball over the fence for a point. After the game Robbo admitted he didn't know the rules. "I didn't think that rule was applied as yet. I thought after that I'm going to get traded next year or I'm going to get dropped after that, but we came away with a win," he told the AFL website.

TIGER PAIN

The 50-50 calls didn't all go Richmond's - just ask Steven Morris, who was called up for a push, or high contact, or something, after punching the ball away from Eddie Betts as the Blues made their charge in the third quarter. Betts tried to hug the ball to his chest but it popped out, with Morris getting a fist in as he tried to snaffle it on the second attempt. Replays showed any contact to the Carlton forward was minimal, but Betts happily accepted the free and made the Tigers pay by curling through a left-foot snap. In the first term, the Blues stayed in touch thanks to two tough holding the ball decisions against Dylan Grimes and Bachar Houli, the latter particularly unlucky.

FREO'S HOUSE OF PAIN

Victorian fans have been complaining about Perth teams benefiting from "home-town umpiring" for years. On Saturday roles were reversed with Fremantle losing the free kick count 25-19 at Simonds Stadium and trailing 8-3 at one stage early in the game. Those eight included a bizarre free kick to Steve Johnson who took on three tacklers and was gone cold for holding the ball, but won a free after an arm brushed across his shoulder. He kicked a goal from the resulting free, as did James Podsiadly after the umpire pulled up Zac Dawson for a jumper punch in the goalsquare as the ball dribbled over for a rushed behind.
