MINIMALISM and decluttering are buzz words at the moment — it seems every second person is on a mission to improve organisation in some aspect of their lives.
Living in disorganised chaos can negatively impact your overall mental and physical energy, so the positive impact of getting organised at home can literally be life changing.
Consumerism and small-space living are both contributing to the issue of storage, making it difficult to keep things under control.
The best way to organise your home is to work room by room. Sort through each drawer, cupboard and wardrobe, and if an item does not serve a purpose and you cannot remember when it was last used, let it go.
Here are a few key ways to cut down on clutter.
Tidy habits
These are the foundation of a well-organised lifestyle. Reduce visual clutter by finding a home for everything. Create what I like to call a “drop zone”, ideally near the front door. This is a place where keys, wallets, phones et cetera are left once you are home. This will prevent rummaging through your handbag or yesterday’s clothing in despair as you rush to leave the house the next day.
Going paperless
Establish a good filing system for your documents. It will reduce stressful situations like tax time or looking for a receipt to return a damaged item. Consider going digital and scanning everything to store it electronically.
Baskets
Place a basket in your lounge room or at the foot of your bed. Throw in pillows and extra blankets to keep them off the floor and free up space in the linen closet. Baskets come in all shapes and sizes and are ideal for keeping things neat.
