Celebrity stylist Kelly Smythe allegedly used fake medical scripts for drugs

A popular eastern suburbs celebrity stylist, who has dressed Jennifer Hawkins and Rihanna, spent a night in custody after being accused of providing fake medical scripts for drugs. See what happened when she applied for bail in court.

A well-known Australian celebrity stylist spent a night in custody after being accused of providing fake medical scripts for drugs.

Kelly Smythe faced Downing Centre Local Court through video link on Friday, where she made a release application while being held on remand at Surry Hills Police Station.

The 47-year-old, from Point Piper in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, has been charged with two counts of using a false document to obtain property and two counts of obtaining or attempting to get a prohibited drug by false representation. No pleas have been entered.

Smythe kickstarted her career as a stylist at Channel 7 before going on to dress household names including Sonia Kruger, Jennifer Hawkins, Rihanna, Miranda Kerr, Melissa George, Chris Hemsworth, Kim Cattrall, Kelly Rowland and Eva Longoria.

Smythe was described as the “it girl” of the 2000s, gaining international recognition for her work and was voted onto the Best Dressed List for Harpers Bazaar in 2007.

Charge sheets tendered to the court state Smythe allegedly used a false letter and two fraudulent scripts to get dexamphetamine and lisdexamfetamine from the Paddington Compounding Pharmacy on February 21 and May 15.

Smythe was arrested about 7pm on May 15 and was charged at Surry Hills Police Station.

Smythe’s barrister Charles Alexander lodged a release application on his client’s behalf.

“She knows she needs to stay on the straight and narrow,” he told the court.

Magistrate Sharon Freund said the police facts indicated there may be further charges pending, but no fresh charges had been laid.

“I suspect your client may have an issue with the drugs she has been self-prescribing,” she said.

Ms Freund said Smythe had a “very limited” criminal record.

Police prosecutor Nick Dobson did not oppose Smythe’s bail application.

Ms Freund granted her bail under the conditions that she report to Rose Bay Police Station, not consume drugs or alcohol and accept treatment recommended by her doctor.

Smythe wore gold rimmed glasses during her court appearance and said “thank you so much, ma’am” to Ms Freund before the video link disconnected. The case has been adjourned to June.

Smythe registered her business, KS Style and Co, in December 2017 where she led a stylist team out of Sydney and Melbourne.

However her days in the limelight and social media presence has been quiet since December 2022 with her last Instagram post of Kruger’s red carpet outfit at the AACTA Awards. Smythe’s account has more than 30,000 followers.

Over the years, the fashionista has maintained that high quality basic clothing pieces are the foundation to styling properly.
