Former Liberal MP Rory Amon has been released from custody after spending a night in a cell because he “forgot” to report to police.
The ex-state MP for Pittwater, who is charged with historical child sex offences, was arrested at Sydney’s Day Street Police Station on Wednesday night, having failed to report the previous day in accordance with his bail conditions.
When the 35-year-old fronted Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday afternoon, wearing a blue jumper and jeans, his lawyer Dev Bhutai put the bail breach down to forgetfulness and described it as “nothing serious”.
Police prosecutors agreed and did not oppose Amon’s release.
Magistrate Daniel Covington found the breach proven but continued Amon’s bail, indicating the 35-year-old was not a flight risk.
Amon refused to answer questions about his arrest when he subsequently walked out of Surry Hills Police Station.
He is awaiting trial in the NSW District Court after pleading not guilty to 10 charges, including aggravated indecent assault and sexual intercourse with a child aged between 10 and 14.
The charges relate to allegations Amon sexually abused a 13-year-old boy in 2017, when he was a local councillor on the Northern Beaches.
Police allege Amon and the boy met on the gay hook-up website “Squirt” before subsequently communicating on Snapchat.
