Council has approved a 24/7 service station despite concerns for the height of a pylon sign infringing on zoning requirements.

A development application for a $1.8m Liberty Service station at 232-236 Hammond Ave in East Wagga Wagga was presented to council during their ordinary meeting on February 27.

The project includes a 24hr service station/convenience store, two freestanding car and truck canopies with eight and nine fuel bowsers respectively and an underground tank farm.

Signage was also slated to include a 10.14m high pylon sign, 15 car parks along with road works to facilitate turning into the development.

In council documents, it was understood up to four to five staff would be present on site at any one time.

The development would join more than a dozen other service stations open in Wagga run by companies such as Shell, Ampol and United.

Council said in their agenda documents the development was acceptable in its location, provided the pylon sign height would be at maximum 8m tall.

Council documents say the proposed height of its pylon sign would result in “unreasonable impacts on the streetscape” and was “excessively high”.

It was stated in council documents the project would provide additional highway service options for the travelling public while providing fuel and food for residents and visitors nearby.

Three formal public submissions were received during the feedback period of the development which included stormwater impacts, impacts on access to existing properties and fencing.

One submission said the auxiliary left turn lane to the site would bring “traffic flow, at speed, frighteningly close” to the entry of nearby properties.

Concerns were also raised for the “unsafe” road and access design.

Council said in the agenda documents matters were considered in full and had been address by conditions of consent.

Charging stations for electrical cars were considered “beyond the scope” for the project, according to council documents.
