Wagga will soon be treated to a Portuguese fast food favourite and drive-through coffee shop all in the same spot as part of a $3.1m development.

Oporto and Kickstart Espresso was recently approved by council at the car park of the former Masters Building along Hammond Ave in East Wagga much to the delight of burger lovers in the Riverina.

Originally lodged in early February, the Portuguese fan favourite is a welcome business to the town, so much so a Facebook page was made called Bring Oporto to Wagga Wagga pushing for its inception.

The project involves demolition of the site and preparation works within the existing carparking area before it was subdivided into two new lots.

Arising from those lots will be Oporto which will include on-site eating, seating, drive-drive-through and carparking, while Kickstart Espresso will only specialise in takeaway food and drinks with no dine-in option.

Higgins Planning in its development submission said the applicant met with council to discuss preliminary concept designs for the development which included queuing distances for the drive through.

In an assessment, the developer said the Oporto drive-through would provide queuing for at least eight cars while Kickstart Espresso would provide for at least 17 cars.

This would be complemented with an “internal circulation road” from Kooringal Rd with any potential overflow of cars to be confined within this road.

Oporto would operate from Monday to Sunday 8am to 10pm and hire eight employees during peak times and three during non-peak hours.

Kickstart Espresso would operate from 6am to 2pm Monday to Friday, Saturday 7am to 12pm and will be closed on Sunday.

It will employ up to four staff during peak times and three in non-peak hours.

Development documents say the project would meet consumer demand in Wagga, provide drive through facilities for online orders and increase employment from the business and construction.

Oporto will be situated within a stone’s throw of Hungry Jacks and McDonald’s which are both located on Hammond Ave.
