A Riverina farmer has saved the lives of four people through his organs after he died in hospital five days after a devastating crash at Tarcutta, in the state’s Riverina region.

George Hassett was left brain dead after he was involved in a truck and car collision along the Hume Hwy on August 11. He spent several days on life support in Canberra Hospital with critical injuries.

NSW Police confirmed the 30-year-old Book Book man died in hospital on Wednesday, leaving behind his wife Aly Hassett and their two twin boys.

Mrs Hassett told this publication her partner of four years was able to donate his heart, kidneys and liver to four people to save their lives.

His lungs could not be donated because they were too damaged from the crash.

“He was just a really involved dad … he loved his boys with so much proud and joy,” Mrs Hassett said. “Six months into dating he said he wanted to have kids and when he found out we were having twins he hit the jackpot. I’m just glad he got to experience it for 13 to 14 months.”

Mrs Hassett said their family wanted to encourage the importance of organ donation and how rare it actually was, and urged people to consider to become donors.

She said her fiance’s funeral was expected to take place next week at Adelong.

He was granted bail to appear before Wagga Wagga Local Court on October 4.

Mrs Hassett said the driver was one of their family’s best mates and she did not blame him for the crash.

Mr Hassett relished the life he spent on open paddocks after being drawn to the life of the outdoors while on his aunty’s farm in his younger years, where he learned how to ride and work with cattle.

His fiance said he had spent several years in the Northern Territory as a head stockman before moving back to the Riverina where he worked as a farmer.

Mrs Hassett said her hubby rang her before the crash and asked her to rope off the horses before they exchanged “I love you” to one another, which would be her last words to her partner.

The driver of the truck was not injured in the collision and has not been charged.

A GoFundMe has since been created to help the Hassetts after this tragedy, with almost $250,000 raised.
