Two teenagers who told police they were allegedly victims in a shopping centre brawl have been charged after they failed to attend a police station to provide statements.
About 3.40pm on Thursday, police were called to Wagga Marketplace following an alleged brawl involving five females.
Wagga Police Inspector John Aichinger said that based on further CCTV investigations after the pair failed to show up, police now allege the pair began altercation.
Inspector Aichinger said the two females, aged 19 and 17, were released from the scene under the commitment they would attend the station.
“This morning, they were both arrested,” Inspector Aichinger said.
“The 19-year-old is charged with affray. “The 17-year-old will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act for the same offence.”
Inspector Aichinger said the other three females are alleged to have been victims.
“All five females were known to each other, but we’re unaware of the actual motive and reason behind the fight,” he said.
“The offence of affray is centred around making people feel safe. No injuries were sustained. However, they were still committing an offence,” Inspector Aichinger alleged.
“That kind of behaviour is just unacceptable in our community.”
Both of the accused are set to face court on July 29.
