A young man behind the wheel of a tragic crash that killed his 19-year-old girlfriend will be sentenced for dangerous driving later this year.

Matthew Luke Agius, 21, was driving with his girlfriend Casey Mallia, then 19, in the early hours of December 22, 2018, when his Toyota Hilux left the road and flipped on the Sturt Hwy, about 45km southeast of Narrandera.

Mallia was trapped in the wreckage of the vehicle before being flown to Canberra Hospital where she eventually succumbed to her injuries the next day.

Agius was also taken to hospital in a critical condition but survived the crash.

He was later charged by police with dangerous driving occasioning death and was committed for sentence in the District Court.

The prosecution said in court on Wednesday that several victim impact statements would be read to the court during the sentencing.

He sought an adjournment to late July as there were “family members on both sides wanting to attend proceedings”.

Casey Mallia was just 19 when she was killed in a single-car crash in the Riverina in 2018.

Judge Mark Buscombe granted the adjournment, but said it would be a difficult task getting everyone in the same courtroom during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“If there’s a request that family members on both sides want to attend, you could approach the judges and ask if they are content for a limited number of people to be in the courtroom,” he said.

Judge Buscombe ordered a Sentencing Assessment Report for Agius, and said the two parties must exchange materials by July 21.

Agius will be sentenced on July 28.
