A 17-year-old P-plater was caught speeding through a busy strip of road at peak hour in the Wagga CBD on Thursday, with children and their families witnessing the incident.

Police from the Riverina Highway Patrol unit were patrolling the Edmondson St area at around 3pm on November 26, when they spotted the vehicle more than doubling the speed limit.

Officers pulled the Mazda 6 over and informed the 17-year-old male driver that he was driving 94km in a 40km school zone.

The driver who was on a provisional license had his license suspended on the spot for the period of six months.

The 17-year-old will also be feeling the pinch, as police issued the young man with a $2676 fine for his dangerous driving.

Riverina Police Superintendent Bob Noble said the incident was extremely disappointing.

“School zones are set up for a reason and that reason is the safety of young people and their families,” Superintendent Noble said.

“This person was only a young man himself and would of only had his license for a short time.

“Anytime school is sitting the 40km speed limits will be in force and they are in force for a very good reason,” he said.

Kildare Catholic College, Wagga High School and South Wagga Public School are three schools located in the vicinity of Edmondson St.

“It’s extremely dangerous to go those speeds at anytime along that stretch of road, let alone in school hours,” Superintendent Noble said.

Superintendent Noble called on drivers to be careful on the roads at all times and to take extra care coming up to the busy “silly season”.

“This is a reminder for people to take care and obey the speed limits whenever they get behind the wheel,” Superintendent Noble said.

“Because if they don’t they will be caught and suffer the consequences like this young man is today,” he said.
