A $27 million proposal to help Wagga’s seniors and those with a disability is on the cards.

A development application for 100 independent senior living units, with a number of apartments designed for adults living with a disability at Glenfield, has been lodged with Wagga Council.

The Opening Doors Foundation, previously known as the Haven, is behind the plans after researching the desperate need for senior social housing to be built in the Riverina.

“ODF’s research and community consultation has identified that there is still a significant need for additional social housing for seniors as well as the need for quality disability housing in the Wagga Wagga region,” the development application states.

The Foundation bought the land for the proposed development at 62 and 70 Pinaroo Drive Glenfield with the board adopting the site’s masterplan in August.

The seniors living units would consist of various types of residential units including a bed-sitter with lounge area, a single bedroom and ensuite, with kitchen, private outdoor area to rear of the unit and a front veranda.

There would also be two-bedroom homes made available with all units to be built with improved liveability features, fully accessible and high physical support.

If approved, the units are expected to have an enormous positive social and financial impact on our city and its residents, according to the documents.

“The primary advantages are … the provision of rental accommodation for persons over the age of 55 provides an affordable alternative for this demographic group to reside in a retirement village environment and enjoy the social interaction and sense of community that comes with this.”

The facility means residents would be able to access and enjoy the services, recreational facilities and transport services Wagga has to offer as it is just 400 metres in distance to the South City Shopping Centre and a bus stop.

The facility is expected to be constructed in three stages and would inject millions into engineering, construction and trade services.

“Once construction is completed, it is estimated that the project will generate a revenue stream of $1.124 million … per annum and employment for two to four part-time staff,” stated the development application.

“Profits from this revenue stream will be used to generate funds for future community projects.”
