Whiter’s Butchery voted best butcher on the south coast

We asked you who the best butcher on the south coast is and the results are in. FIND OUT WHO THE WINNER IS.

After putting out a call for nominations for the south coast’s best butcher of 2020 and counting the votes in our online poll the winner can be revealed.

Readers of The South Coast News have voted for the best butcher in the region, with Fred and Sheena Whiter taking out the gold.

The couple have been running the business for two years, and said their focus is on supporting local producers.

“We were a mobile butchery on the Monaro, and have a lot of connections with local farmers,” Mr Whiter said.

“We are really passionate about what we do.”

Ms Whiter said she was almost in tears after learning of the business’s win on Friday.

While it has been a tough time for the couple with drought and bushfires, making it difficult at times to source produce, Mr Whiter said the business constantly received compliments from customers.

Last year they supplied produce for the National Press Club in Canberra.

“It’s been a really tough year for everybody, but we still get comments from customers asking if we have franchises in metropolitan areas,” Mr Whiter said.

“One bloke from Melbourne said we have the best bacon he’s ever tasted.”

Ms Whiter said the couple want to educate people on “the story of meat”, and where it comes from, and said during the COVID-19 pandemic more customers want to source local food.

She said more customers also want to know where their food is coming from.

“If it’s naturally grown then it’s got to be naturally better,” Mr Whiter said.

While they supply locals with Christmas feats, the couple usually works a 90 hour week in the lead up to the big day, and like to keep it low key.

“We’ll probably have ham and salad sandwiches and some prawns by the river with the kids,” Mr Whiter said.
