A south coast labourer accused of a drunken police pursuit through a quiet residential suburb in March will be kept off the road after being granted bail by a local court.

Steven James Dawson is charged with evading police, driving dangerously and with high-range PCA, resisting police, and speeding, after the midnight chase in Bomaderry.

The 38-year-old Nowra man is alleged to have been clocked travelling at 108km/h in a 50km/h zone on Meroo Rd on March 13 by officers from the Nowra Highway Patrol.

Dawson is alleged to have failed to stop at police direction, and a pursuit was initiated. The vehicle he was travelling in, a Proton sedan, later came to a halt on Alfred St in Bomaderry.

Dawson is alleged to have resisted two senior police constables.

He was subjected to a roadside breath test and was taken to Nowra Police Station where he is alleged to have recorded a blood-alcohol content of 0.167.

According to court documents, Dawson has two previous driving offences dating back to 2013, but has no history of violence or of committing offences while on bail.

The documents state: “The accused driving at speed, highly intoxicated while avoiding police and engaging in a pursuit place incredible risk to the community and is extremely serious in nature.

“The prosecution case is extremely strong.”

Dawson will remain on bail with his licence suspended.

According to bail conditions seen by The South Coast News, Dawson will not be allowed behind the wheel of a car or in the driver’s seat.

He will return to the Nowra Local Court in May.
