A quiet seaside town could be in for a substantial facelift if plans for two new multistorey apartment buildings are approved.
Less than 1000 people currently reside in Huskisson, a town near Jervis Bay.
Under plans lodged with Shoalhaven City Council this month, 29 new residential units could be built as part of the new multistorey buildings.
According to one developer, the project represents the “emerging and desired character” of the Huskisson CBD.
The first project is located at 45 Duncan St, adjacent to the Huskisson CBD, and will comprise of eight two-bedroom units, seven three-bedroom units, and carparking space for 28 vehicles.
According to applicants PDC Lawyers and Town Planners: “The proposed residential apartment building provides a range of accommodation sizes in a sought-after high amenity location.
“Future occupants will be afforded high levels of residential amenity both as a result of the physical design and location of the building.
“The site is currently surrounded by a range of residential densities and styles, however the proposal represents the emerging and desired character for this area of Huskisson.”
The project is located in the vicinity of employment opportunities in the Huskisson and Vincentia CBDs, according to PDC, and will provide increased housing choice and low maintenance living opportunities.
To make way for the new building, PDC is proposing to demolish a house, pool, detached garage and scattered vegetation already located on the lot.
For that, the developers will require approval from the council after applications were lodged on March 17.
That same day, PDC also proposed a second building in the area, which was lodged with the Shoalhaven City Council and is currently undergoing vetting.
Located on nearby Beach St, the four-storey building will feature 10 three-bedroom apartments, four two-bedroom apartments, and car parking for 28 vehicles.
In their submission, PDC similarly put forward the idea that the building was in keeping with the future face of Huskisson.
“The project will provide an appropriate and complementary response to its particular contextual setting,” the documents state.
The oceanfront building is located close to Huskisson Beach, and will also face Nowra St and Winnima Ln as it is a corner lot.
As a result, PDC said they will integrate different building techniques to account for the multiple frontages.
“The proposal is both responsive in ‘plan form’ and ‘elevational treatment to each of its frontages,” planning documents state.
“The building facade identifies the outward expression and planning of each individual apartment while bringing together a series of articulated forms, including floating projecting balcony elements, horizontal blade walls, and louvre privacy.”
Construction will be comprised of a varied palette of materials, according to PDC, which will include glass balustrades, rendered and painted surfaces, and prefinished windows screens.
As for landscaping, PDC said seven per cent of the lot will be reserved for deep soil suitable for large trees.
Both projects are awaiting council approval and require vetting.
