A Queensland man accused of raping a woman on the NSW south coast nearly two decades ago has been told his case must “move forward”.
Reginal Bulu faced Batemans Bay Local Court on Monday, charged with sexual intercourse without consent.
The 47-year-old, from Molendinar on the Gold Coast, is yet to enter pleas.
Police allege Bulu raped a woman in Narooma on the south coast between July 30 and July 31, 2005.
Documents tendered to the court state Bulu allegedly had sexual intercourse with the woman, knowing he did not have her consent.
Bulu would have been 29 at the time of the alleged rape.
The court heard the alleged victim went to police years later, before Bulu was arrested last year following investigations.
He remains in the community and is not subject to bail conditions, according to the court.
In Batemans Bay Local Court on Monday, a self-represented Bulu said he was currently looking for a lawyer.
He asked for an adjournment in order to find one.
Magistrate Doug Dick said the “very serious” matter needed to progress.
While Mr Dick said he would allow a further adjournment, he said a plea would need to be entered on the next occasion.
“You need to get a lawyer so we can start to move forward,” he said.
Bulu’s matter was adjourned for a further two weeks.
He will return to Batemans Bay Local Court on August 12 via video link, given he lives 1146km from the town.
