A Tantawangalo woman charged with mistreating ponies on the south coast may be forced to pay tens of thousands of dollars to the RSPCA if she is found guilty in a December hearing.
Janice Louise Denny, also known as Janice Northey, 58, appeared in Bega Local Court on Tuesday as she faces two charges of failing to provide proper and sufficient food to an animal and two charges of failing to provide vet treatment to an animal.
She has pleaded not guilty to all four charges.
The charges were brought by the RSPCA NSW in March and relate to the alleged mistreatment of four horses in Candelo and Tantawangalo.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Liza Brown told the court the RSPCA was seeking $24,024 in costs after the animals were seized in January following an investigation in late 2019.
The RSPCA have alleged the animals were in very poor condition.
They allege the offences took place between November 17 last year and January 17 this year.
The court heard a representative from the RSPCA was unable to appear in court due to illness and that Denny will represent herself at the hearing.
Sergeant Brown told the court six prosecution witnesses will be called, while Denny will be the sole defence witness.
Magistrate Doug Dick adjourned the matter to Bega Local Court for what he anticipated to be an almost two-day hearing starting on December 22.
