What to do if you think a child is being abused

A Jervis Bay man charged with allegedly making and disseminating child abuse material on his iPhone at his idyllic seaside home town has been slapped with an additional charge at a South Coast court.

Dyson Hogan appeared at Nowra Local Court on Tuesday where he faced eight separate charges relating to child abuse material, including possession, production, and dissemination.

The 21-year-old was charged by police earlier this year with also using a carriage service to possess child abuse material, as well as transmit, access, and solicit material for more than a year.

Police allege Hogan used an iPhone on a Telstra network to gain access to child abuse material from September 2020 to November 2021, while residing at a property in St Georges Basin, south of Nowra.

A new charge of intentionally recording intimate images without consent was added by the Commonwealth Department of Public Prosecution, who also called for an adjournment to finalise its submissions.

According to a sentence assessment report tendered to court, Hogan allegedly accepted the police account of events and that he was responsible for the distribution of child abuse material.

“However, Hogan denies that the images provided him with any sexual pleasure or that he viewed any of the content,” the report states.

“He reported he felt isolated and attributed his offending to reacting out of fear, and felt he was unable to ask for help. He felt embarrassed by the situation and did not think of the consequences.”

Hogan, who is employed by a supermarket, claimed to have not known any of the children who were involved with the images, according to the report, or who they were sent by via social media.

“In hindsight, he said he should have reported the images to police,” the report states. “He expressed remorse and that ‘he wished it had never happened.’”

Hogan will reappear at the same court for committal on October 25.
