A man has crashed his car before attempting to flee the scene on foot in a wild police chase gone wrong on the NSW south coast, a court has heard.

The incident saw Dereck Jessen, 30, wind up in Batemans Bay Local Court on Monday in custody, pleading guilty to charges of police pursuit not stop, drive recklessly and hinder officer in execution of duty.

The Batemans Bay man entered the pleas in court the day after the police chase.

Police state Jessen was driving a Toyota Hatchback along Beach Rd, Batemans Bay around 10pm on Sunday night, when officers patrolling the same road viewed the 30-year-old speeding.

A short time later, police located the same car on the recently opened Glenella Rd, before clocking him travelling at 115km/h in the 80 zone.

Despite activating police lights, Jessen failed to stop, initiating a police chase where officers reached the same speeds of more than 110km/h.

After a short pursuit, Jessen failed to negotiate a bend and the Toyota Hatchback struck a metal barrier on the eastern side of the Princes Hwy – about 800m south of Lattas Point Rd, Batemans Bay.

Police stated the car then slid down the road, hitting a concrete dividing barrier.

After the crash, Jessen emerged from the car before attempting to flee the scene of the incident on foot, however he was quickly apprehended by officers and arrested.

Jessen was taken to Batemans Bay Police station where he was refused bail and charged with the offences, before appearing in Batemans Bay Local Court the following day.

Jessen’s lawyer Adam Sumbak noted his client recently had a litany of other, unrelated charges dealt with in the court only months before the police chase.

Documents tendered to the court reveal Jessen was serving community correction orders for charges of being armed to commit an offence, contravene restriction in AVO, assault occasioning in actual bodily harm and common assault.

Magistrate Doug Dick considered the previous charges from 2023 when sentencing, noting they would result in the punishment being extreme.

Jessen was convicted, fined a total of $1600 and sentenced to a six month intensive corrections order.
