A convicted animal abuser is set to fight an avalanche of fresh claims she illegally owned more than 70 animals from turtles to dogs and kept them in “cramped” and “unhygienic” conditions.
Janine Marion’s lengthy hearing was scheduled in Nowra Local Court on Tuesday, weeks after the 53-year-old woman pleaded not guilty to more than 40 animal abuse charges.
The charges include 17 counts of failure to comply with court order [possessing an animal], 13 counts of commit an act of cruelty upon an animal, eight counts of failure to provide vet treatment, two counts of aggravated cruelty upon an animal, one count of being in charge of an animal and fail to provide vet treatment and one count of hinder or resist police officer in execution of duty.
Marion – who court documents reveal was convicted and barred from owning any animal in 2018 for 10 years – was previously out on bail. However, it was revoked when the Nowra woman failed to appear in court, blaming her absence on sickness.
Marion was placed on remand at Silverwater Correctional Complex where she remains.
Police and RSPCA allege Marion had custody of 72 animals between October 2023 and June 2024, including four ducks, five quails, 20 guinea pigs, four turtles, six dogs, eight rabbits, one cat and 20 birds.
RSPCA and police visited Marion’s property in June last year, where they allegedly found animals kept in terrible conditions, as well as discovering a number of animals to be suffering from serious injuries.
In court on Tuesday, Magistrate Lisa Viney set the lengthy hearing.
Marion, represented by Rosemarie Lambert, will fight her allegations in the five-day hearing at Milton Local Court on October 13.
