After putting out a call for nominations for the south coast’s best cafe of 2021 and counting the votes in our online poll, the winner can finally be revealed.

Readers of The South Coast News have voted for the best cafe in the region, with Bean2Sussex Cafe in Sussex Inlet taking the gold.

The cafe has only been on its current site for three months after owner Greg Dyer was forced to make a shift from the town’s Jopen Complex due to the economic impact of the bushfires and COVID-19.

Mr Dyer said he was close to closing his doors due to the cost of running the cafe, but was saved by a government grant which allowed him to make a shift to Jacobs Drive.

He said he was “shocked” to hear his team has been voted the best on the coast, but said it proves they must be doing something right, and customers enjoy the cafe’s friendly atmosphere.

“I don’t really know what to say,” he said with a laugh.

“Everybody must like what we do.”

He said the business has loyal customers who visit everyday for the drinks and fresh food which is all made on site.

“It is definitely working for us. If we hadn’t moved I’d be back working for someone else,” he said.

“Financially I didn’t get much help from the landlord which made it hard.

“I’ve been running the cafe for six years and most businesses close after 12 months, so we’re proof the model is working.”

Mr Dyer said he enjoys the lifestyle the cafe offers him, meeting new people every day, and employing locals.

Cafe manager Rae Chambers said the cafe’s caramel lattes, all day breakfasts and schnitzels are popular with customers.

“I’m actually really surprised we’ve won because we have just moved into a new space, but we do good coffee,” the 36-year-old said.

Ms Chambers said the secret to a great coffee is to use clean machines and fresh beans, and most important of all “don’t burn it”.

“I love interacting with people. You see the same faces everyday, and if you don’t see them, you worry,” she said.

“I’ve always been in hospitality. I love it.

“The interactions are great and it keeps you busy.

“I can see myself here for a little longer. I don’t see myself leaving,” she said.
