A student, surfer, and “beloved” friend – originally from Jervis Bay – has been identified as one of the 10 wedding guests killed in a horrific bus crash in the Hunter Valley on Sunday night.

Tributes have been flowing for 28-year-old Angus Craig, a former Vincentia High School student who was living in Queensland to work as a reliability engineer for the mining firm, BHP.

Mr Craig had graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Wollongong before going onto work for Rio Tinto and Yancoal Australia. He joined BHP in March 2021 who, in a note to staff, confirmed the death of an employee at Blackwater Mine, in Central Queensland.

“This is a terrible loss for our colleague’s family and friends, our OS team, the broader Blackwater Mine site and local community,” the note said.

“The impact of incidents like this knows no bounds, and this will ripple across our tight knit community.”

Former primary and high school friend Jade Colligan paid tribute to Mr Craig on social media, describing him as a “beautiful person”.

“I’ll always remember a smart, genuine and caring guy who had the whole world ahead of him,” she said.

“He was such a beautiful person that made everyone around him better. This was a horrible tragedy that I hope never happens again.”

Another friend, Mekayla Burdfield, posted how she was heartbroken at the news.

“I spent the day in shock just trying to fathom how this has come to pass,” she said. “I see your face all around me, recalling all the memories we had together with our amazing group of school friends.

“We were truly blessed to have shared those years together, and the degree to which you brightened our lives is immeasurable.”

Friend Georgia Kate also paid tribute to the former Jervis Bay local.

“So grateful to have had the pleasure of knowing such a kind and beautiful soul like you Angus Craig,” she said. “You were the glue in our friend group and the responsible dad behind all of our adventures and bad ideas.

“You really were a light in this world and we will miss you endlessly.”

Mr Craig was one of 10 people killed in the horror bus crash, which saw the bus roll on a roundabout at Greta, in the NSW Hunter region.

Along with Mr Craig, Darcy Bulman from Melbourne, Tori Cowburn from Mt Thorley, Zach Bray from Byron Bay, Rebecca Mullen from Newcastle, Andrew and Lynan Scott from Queensland, Kane Symons from Tasmania and Nadene and Kyah McBride from Singleton also tragically lost their lives.
