An engineer working in Queensland’s coal mining industry has been identified as one those unaccounted for in a horrific bus crash that claimed the lives of 10 people and injured 25 others in the Hunter Valley.

Angus Craig, who according to LinkedIn worked for mining firm BHP as a reliability engineer at its Blackwater coal mine west of Rockhampton, was a passenger on the private bus returning to Singleton from the Lovedale wedding of Mitchell Gaffney and Madeleine Edsell.

He tragically died when the bus overturned on a roundabout on Wine Country Drive, near the Hunter Expressway off-ramp in Greta just after 11.30pm Sunday.

His friend Zach Bray, from Byron Bay, also died in the crash, along with Queensland couple Andrew and Lynan Scott.

Mr Craig, originally from Jervis Bay in the Australian Capital Territory but now understood to be living in Brisbane, studied a Bachelor of Engineering at the University of Wollongong before going on to work for Rio Tinto and Yancoal Australia, then joining BHP in March 2021.

He has been described on social media by grief-stricken friends as ‘the most beautiful soul’.

“I remember Angus from school. He was in my year. Such a kind, beautiful soul,” one friend posted.

“He was always so nice. What an absolute loss to this world,” another commented.

In a note to staff on Tuesday evening, BHP confirmed a member of its OS maintenance team at Blackwater Mine tragically lost his life in the crash.

“This is a terrible loss for our colleague’s family and friends, our OS team, the broader Blackwater Mine site and local community,” the note, seen by this publication, read.

“Over the last 24 hours the Leadership Team has been working to support these people and we will continue to do so.

“The impact of incidents like this knows no bounds, and this will ripple across our tight knit community.”
