Investigators returned to the area surrounding Ruttleys Rd on Monday as they seek further witnesses and possible CCTV of a vessel believed to have been carrying the gunman or gunmen on Friday afternoon.

Police were called to one creekside property about 5.45pm after residents reported hearing gunfire.

They discovered a backyard shed littered with bullet holes and investigations have pointed to the shots being fired from a boat along Wyee Creek.

Photographs of the crime scene clearly show at least four projectiles had smashed through a window of a disused shed sitting just metres from a residence.

Early investigations suggest it was a random shooting and no one was injured.

“To discharge a firearm in this way, in a public place and when any number of people could have been around, is extremely dangerous and beyond irresponsible,’’ Lake Macquarie crime manager Detective Inspector Steve Benson said.

“Once you discharge a round, you lose control off that round and there are any number of residences in that area which could have been in the firing line.’’

Police have returned to the area in a search for answers.

Detectives were doorknocking residents on Monday as they continue to gather intelligence on the shooting.

They are also reviewing private CCTV cameras in the hope it could identify a vessel or those on board.

Police have also made a public plea for any information surrounding the shooting.

Information should be forwarded to Lake Macquarie detectives or CrimeStoppers.
