Detectives have charged a man over two stabbings at Waratah, including a weekend attack which left a woman bleeding badly from an arm injury.

Jack Fynn, 20, was arrested at a Mayfield address about 6.30am on Tuesday and charged with two counts of wound a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police allege he stabbed a 38-year-old man in the carpark of the Waratah Shopping Village on Thursday night, who suffered cuts to his forearm before being taken to John Hunter Hospital.

In a separate incident, police further allege he stabbed a 26-year-old woman with a knife again in the car park of the shopping centre on Sunday afternoon.

She suffered a stab wound to her arm and was taken to John Hunter Hospital, where she has since undergone surgery.

Following an investigation, police believe both incidents to be linked and targeted.

In Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday Mr Fynn didn’t make an appearance but his legal aid solicitor mentioned his matter briefly, asking for a mental health assessment for her client.

That was granted, before being adjourned until August.

Commander of Newcastle Police, Superintendent Brett Greentree has commended his officers on their tenacious work which has resulted in the man’s arrest.

“These attacks were targeted, and police acted swiftly to put someone before the courts,” said Superintendent Greentree.

“Any serious incident that occurs in the community is of great concern and our priority is keeping the community safe.”
