Maitland, Telarah: Second man, 24, charged over alleged police assaults following vehicle stop

Police warned a second man allegedly involved in the assault of three police officers at Maitland on Sunday that they were looking for him. He was arrested yesterday afternoon and will face court today. WARNING GRAPHIC IMAGES.

A second man has now been charged after three police officers were assaulted following a confrontation at a vehicle stop in Maitland on Sunday.

Yesterday, police called for the 24-year-old to hand himself in, before he was arrested at a home on Ada St, Telarah just after 3pm on Monday.

Tyrone Fernando, 20, has already been charged over the incident, accused of allegedly punching and fracturing the eye socket of one police officer and assaulting two others.

At About 8.40pm Sunday night, a Port Stephens-Hunter Police officer stopped a Ford hatchback on Trevor St, Telarah, after it was allegedly driving dangerously.

Police allege two men, Mr Fernando and his passenger, got out of the car and approached the officer as he was walking towards them.

Mr Fernando allegedly pushed the male officer and as the sergeant tried to arrest him, the passenger inserted himself between them.

Mr Fernando then allegedly punched the officer to the face, before both men fled the scene on foot.

While police were unable to locate the passenger, they spotted the driver at a nearby railway corridor trying to jump a fence.

He allegedly punched a constable multiple times before jumping over the fence and then punched a senior constable who followed him before finally being restrained and arrested.

At Maitland Local Court yesterday, his matter was adjourned until August and he was bail refused.

The 24-year old passenger has been charged with assault police officer cause actual bodily harm, resist officer and escape police custody.

He was refused bail to appear at Maitland Local Court today.

All officers were taken to hospital with injuries but have now been released.
