Police are investigating after two people tragically died, following a two-car crash at Port Stephens on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Port Stephens Drive and Salamander Way, at Salamander Bay, at about 2pm, to find two vehicles had collided at a roundabout.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews worked quickly to free three trapped patients.

Paramedics commenced CPR on the driver of the Toyota Aurion - a 77-year-old woman - and her passenger, an 80-year-old man, but they both died at the scene.

The third person, the drive of the Holden Commodore - a 44-year-old man - was treated at the scene before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for a head injury. He is in a stable condition.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Joel De Zuna said it was “extremely chaotic” when they arrived.

“As a first responder, you are often confronted with a lot of atrocities and trauma, but responding to this job was just gut-wrenching,” he said.

“Our paramedics put their training to the test and did everything they could for the patients involved.

“One loss of life on our roads is never ok, but two in the same incident is devastating.

“There are loved ones not returning home tonight, so our hearts go out to the families involved.”

A crime scene was set up as Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit examined the area, as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Inspector De Zuna urged people on the roads to drive carefully.

“A split second decision can change not only your life but the lives of your passengers and other road users forever,” he added.

“We encourage everyone to learn basic CPR in case they come across a crash, or any incident. Every minute counts and if you can get in there and assist prior to our arrival, it can help to make the difference between life and death.”
