Public schools continue to do well in NAPLAN results, with Merewether High School achieving the top results in the Hunter for secondary schools.
Students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 took part in the nationwide standardised testing in May last year, which measures literacy, numeracy and grammar.
Released on Wednesday, primary school NAPLAN results across the Hunter showed that public schools were taking it to their private counterparts.
It was also the case for high schools across the region, with 50 per cent of the top 10 recording the best NAPLAN scores.
Merewether High School recorded an average of 661.5, with year 9 grammar the most impressive at 678.
Prestigious private school Newcastle Grammar came in a second place with 602, with Macquarie College closely behind at 596.5.
Notable mentions were The Hunter School of Performing Arts on 579.3 - which also featured in the top five primary schools in the Hunter - and Singleton’s Australian Christian College which just scraped into the top 10 with 569.3.
