NAPLAN results for Hunter’s primary schools; public schools rival private

Public primary schools across the Hunter are taking it to the private schools.
The latest NAPLAN results have been released with four out of the top five being public schools and more than 50 per cent in the top 20.
Students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 took part in the nationwide standardised testing in May last year, which measures literacy, numeracy and grammar.
The top primary school on average results was Charlestown South Public School with 523.6.
The best scores from year 3 students in grammar (570) and year 5 students in grammar (562).
Principal Colin Johnson admits staff and students work extremely hard but credits a change in teaching five years ago that has got them to outstanding results.
“Five years ago we did a review of things and realised we had an outstanding staff, teaching really well, good quality kids but just the retention of things in the long term memory was a struggle,” Mr Johnson said.
“We did a lot of research. We talked very closely to the top performing school in Australia which is Haileybury College in Melbourne, and they were implementing their implicit instruction warm ups in literacy, numeracy and writing.”
“We put in place a few things that would make a huge difference and in 2018, the NAPLAN results went straight through the roof and then 2019 results exceeded that even further.
“I think year three kids, 100 per cent of them were in the band two of NAPLAN for reading which was incredible.”
Prestigious private school, Newcastle Grammar - which costs primary school parents anywhere from $13,000 to $18,000 a year in school fees - came in at number six.
Looking at the top 20, 11 public schools featured including The Hunter School of Performing Arts, Newcastle East Public School and Dudley Public school.
