AN elderly woman is fighting for her life in hospital after being seriously injured in a domestic-related incident at Nelson Bay.
The woman, 71, was taken to Tomaree Hospital before being rushed to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition where she underwent surgery on Thursday morning.
A neighbour told The Newcastle News an ambulance arrived at the Armidale Ave residence at around 7pm on Wednesday night.
Port Stephens Hunter Police attended the home this morning and established a crime scene, as detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
No arrests or charges have yet been made, but a 74-year-old man - the woman’s partner - is currently assisting police with their inquiries.
Other neighbours confirmed the elderly couple had lived at the home for several years.
“They usually kept to themselves,” one neighbour said.
Anyone with information which may help investigators is urged to come forward.
