Maryland: Man arrested in siege, charged with alleged involvement in Lansvale home invasion

Police have applied to suppress the name of a man - involved in a tense stand-off at Newcastle this week - who’s alleged to be involved in a Sydney shooting.

Police have applied to a court to suppress the name of a man who was involved in a tense stand-off at Maryland on Tuesday, with fears it could be detrimental to an ongoing investigation into a Sydney shooting.

The 28-year-old became the third person charged over his role in an attempted murder and robbery in Sydney’s south-west earlier this year, where a man was shot in the stomach.

He’s believed to be one of two masked men who allegedly stormed a granny flat armed with a rifle and hammer on Huntingdale Avenue at Lansvale in the early hours of February 13.

He’s facing charges of shoot with intent to murder; aggravated robbery with wounding; aggravated robbery in company; special aggravated break and enter armed with dangerous weapon and malicious damage.

Police are still on the hunt for the other alleged offender.

On Tuesday NSW Police released an image of a man they hope can assist with inquiries.

Nearly two months on from the Lansvale shooting, Strike force Bellvue tracked down the 28-year-old accused to a home in Maryland, as part of three simultaneous dawn raids at Hunter properties on Tuesday.

Heavily armed squads and a police “bearcat” swarmed Maryland Drive at around 7am, where the suspect kept police at bay for more than four hours before being arrested in his underpants.

Another raid on a Maryland Drive unit ended in the arrest of a 27-year-old woman on unrelated arrest warrants relating to traffic matters. There were no arrests during a third raid on a Mayfield unit.

In Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday, the police prosecutor had an application for a non-publication order “in relation to the names in the police facts” granted by Magistrate Brett Shields.

He stated the application was due to an ongoing investigation and a man was still at large which police were trying to hunt down.

While the man didn’t appear via video link, his solicitor said he intended to make a bail application for his client on his next appearance in a week’s time.

The matter has now been moved to Parramatta Local Court.

Last month police made their first arrest in relation to the Sydney shooting and charged Mayfield couple Daniel Gordon, 42, and Sarah Victoria Picket-Kelly, 28.

Police allege they orchestrated the violent home invasion and armed robbery at Lansvale while staying with friends.

It followed a $5000 “ice” deal at the flat before the pair allegedly waited for the Sydney couple to go to sleep, leaving the door open for two other men to burst in.

Police facts allege one of the masked men shot a man in the stomach, piercing his intestine, before both men grabbed ice, jewellery, money and a designer bag and joined Gordon and Pickett-Kelly back in the car to drive home to Newcastle.

The man had to be rushed to Liverpool hospital and had life saving surgery.
