A feud between two siblings has gone to the next level after a man allegedly grabbed a knife and violently stabbed his younger brother four times in the back following a heated argument, a court has heard.

Daniel Mulholland, 28, had a rocky relationship with his brother Wade, 27, and had previously been the alleged victim of a serious assault at the hands of his sibling, according to his lawyer Drew Hamilton.

The pair had been bunkered down together at their mother’s Fingal Bay residence during the coronavirus outbreak, before Mr Hamilton said they had decided to go to a party at a nearby friend’s place in Nelsons Bay until the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police allege the pair got into a heated argument on the car ride home before a brawl spilt out onto Shoreline Dr. where punches were thrown.

It’s then Mr Mulholland allegedly grabbed a chef’s knife from the kitchen before he went back outside and stabbed his younger brother four times in the back, a court heard.

He’e been charged with wound with inflict to cause grievous bodily harm and affray.

Younger brother Wade is currently still in hospital but is out of intensive care and starting to walk around.

Mr Hamilton told the court there was history between the two brothers and comments had been made towards Daniel before the alleged incident occurred.

Applying for bail, he noted Mr Mulholland was extremely cooperative with police and made full admissions to his conduct and helped with first aid at the scene, before his younger brother was rushed to John Hunter Hospital.

“He’s not a man who has a sporadic violent past,” Mr Hamilton said.

“He is very loved in the community and I wish I could of brought family in to show that.

“These are extraordinary facts and an extraordinary time.”

But police prosecutor Josh McIlveen opposed bail and said Mr Mulholland had made admissions and there were multiple triple-0 calls made during the alleged incident.

He told the court one of the triple-0 callers had heard “I’m going to kill you” in the background. There has been no confirmation as to who said those words.

Magistrate Sharon Crews said with increased cases of COVID-19 within the custodial environment and lengthy delays for jury trials, Mr Mulholland should be granted bail.

He was given strict conditional bail where he’s required to reside with his aunt in Maryland, not travel east of Bob’s Farm into Fingal Bay, abstain from alcohol and drugs and not contact or go near prosecution witnesses, namely his mother.

His matter was adjourned until June at Raymond Terrace Local Court.
