A Lake Macquarie mother, accused of attempting to poison her young son with prescription drugs, has made a desperate bid to see her child again, applying to have her bail varied.

The 34-year-old — who cannot be named for legal reasons — made an application to Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday to change her strict bail conditions which would allow her to have supervised visits with her son.

In April, the woman was charged with attempting to administer poison to a person with intent to murder after police allege she gave her son and herself prescription medication in a bid to kill them both.

A relative found both the woman and the boy unresponsive at their Lake Macquarie home on March 24.

They were rushed to hospital in serious conditions but both have since made a full recovery.

She was granted strict conditional bail which includes home detention where she not leave home unless in the direct company of her husband or brother and she abide by an apprehended violence order.

It also states she is only allowed to make phone contact with her son.

The court heard child protection services were in the process of making arrangements for the woman to have supervised visits from her child but that needed written permission from the father.

“My client hasn’t seen or spent time with her son for some time,” the woman’s solicitor said.

“She’s eager to get that in writing.”

But Magistrate Robert Stone told the court the woman had no jurisdiction to make the application herself.

Instead that application will be made in two days time.

The charges were also adjourned until August with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) taking carriage of the matter.

Following a search warrant of the Lake Macquarie home, detectives were also investigating the seizure of $80,000 worth of cannabis, a large sum of cash and several prohibited weapons.

But no extra charges have been laid.
