Thanks to COVID-19, the boredom factor is off the charts these days!
But the silver lining is that it’s created a challenge for clever local entrepreneurs, thinking of fun and interesting ways to bring what we love to our doorsteps.
When a Newcastle musician was put out of work as COVID-19 shut down all pubs and clubs, he decided to take his hobby and side business to the next level.
Simply put.... it’s a cold brew coffee martini delivery service.
“Late last year we started Brew Bike Nitro as a bit if fun, doing friends weddings,” Founder Jesse Schadel said.
“When all music and events came to a complete halt, it was alarming because we’ve got a four month old son and we thought what are we going to do.”
Serving from a cargo bike at events, Brew Bike Nitro has now been expanded to bring the delicious martini’s to your doorstep.
He’s teamed up with italian restaurant Napoli Centrale in King St, to brew and bottle his coffee martini’s to distribute to lovers right across the Hunter.
And with people stuck at home, the business has gone gangbusters!
“We are getting smashed,” Mr Schadel laughed.
The mix is infused with nitrogen for a minimum of 24 hours, giving it a sweet and creamy texture.
It’s then poured from a specialised stout tap which creates a frothy, coffee thickshake.
“When you pour it, it’s like a Guiness,” Mr Schadel said.
“Adding nitrogen has a really bizzare effect where it sweetens it up and a bit of bonus we don’t have to add any sugar.
“Nitrogen is abundant, it’s 70 per cent of the air we breathe, an inert gas, which makes it very safe and very cheap as well.”
Since the NSW Government lifted restrictions on bars, cafes and restaurants in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s allowed local businesses to think of new ways to get their product out to customers.
“It has really opened up a lot of businesses to stay alive through these sales,” Mr Schadel added.
“Your traditional bars no-one can go to right now, so they can all bottle and do take aways and deliver.
“We’re really hoping it will stay this way.
“People seem to be behaving really responsibly and we check ID, all the RSA still applies, if someone is under the age of 25 we have to ask them for ID, if someone is looking intoxicated we can’t sell it to them.”
And with it’s rapid success, Mr Schadel hasn’t ruled out possible expansion.
But admits his main focus is continuing to deliver a quality product.
“We pride ourselves on that product and we don’t want to jump in and start expanding before we’ve got recipes right,” he said.
“Expansion is in the pipeline. Not promising anything yet but it’s definitely on the mind.”
