Tanilba Bay man to face online grooming and child abuse material charges

A man who allegedly arranged to meet police posing as a mum and her young daughter for a sexual encounter has been arrested in the Hunter Region.

A man from the Hunter Region has been charged with online grooming after allegedly having sexually explicit conversations with police posing as a mum and her young daughter.

State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad detectives arrested the 47-year-old man at Tanilba Bay on Wednesday night.

It comes after detectives form the Child Exploitation Internet Unit (CEIU) began talking with the man online in January.

Police will allege in court that the man believed he was speaking with a woman and her daughter, aged under 10 years, where he engaged in highly-sexualised conversations, sent child abuse material and made arrangements to meet them for sexual activity.

On Wednesday, police carried out a Commonwealth search warrant at a Tanilba Bay home, where several electronic storage devices and other items were allegedly found and will undergo further examination.

The man was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station and charged with use carriage service to groom person intent to procure under 16yrs for sexual activity with another over 18yrs, use carriage service to transmit/publish/promote child abuse, and possess child abuse material.

He was formally refused bail when he appeared at Raymond Terrace Local Court on Wednesday.

He will next appear at Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday 22 February 2023.

Strike Force Trawler is an ongoing investigation by the CEIU into the sexual abuse and exploitation of children through the internet and related telecommunications devices.

Regular covert online investigations are conducted by the CEIU.
