With significant demand for childcare places right across the state, more childcare facilities are continuing to pop up throughout the Hunter.
The latest in Elermore Vale, an outer suburb of Newcastle, is on a piece of land which was originally set for a health services facility.
Mavid Development Pty Ltd has lodged plans for a massive 141 centre-based childcare facility on the corner of Croudace Rd and Aries Way, costing an estimated $3.2 million.
In 2021, a development application to build a medical centre, pharmacy, pathology centre and cafe, as well as a childcare centre, was refused before Newcastle City Council approved a proposal for a health services facility in August last year.
But in January, it was again a change of plans, as a proposal was lodged to instead build a Little Beginnings childcare centre to provide convenient childcare for the local area and broader community.
The development application details the proposal would see the amalgamation of two lots and include some demolition of existing structures, six indoor playrooms, an outdoor play area, office and administration areas for staff, as well as 32 carparking spaces.
The facility will cater for children six weeks to six years of age, with the majority of places, up to 60, for children aged three to five.
It is also set to operate between 6.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday and will be operated by 26 staff at any one time.
“The proposal is considered to be in the public interest as it will deliver a number of public, social and economic benefits with minimal adverse impacts,” a planner said.
“The land use and style of development is appropriate for the location and zoning, and will provide necessary services to passing traffic and locals.
“The proposed development aims to provide convenient child care services for the local Elermore Vale and broader Newcastle community while also, providing a number of employment opportunities for the local community.
“There is significant demand for child care places and this is believed to increase into the future due to the increase in residential population.”
The proposal will go on public exhibition from January 25 to February 9 for any feedback from the public.
