Sadness and anger have fuelled the community following the death of a 22-year-old man after a street fight in Newcastle over the weekend.

Devastated family and friends have left tributes for James Callahan, who police allege was attacked in the popular nightspot of Hamilton in the early hours of November 17 after he made a comment to a group of people about littering.

In a heartbreaking post on social media on Tuesday, Mr Callahan’s sister Sandie said her brother was always standing up for what he believed.

“Rest in peace my baby bro. You loved your fishing & always dressed like a dag,” she wrote.

You can bet your ass I’ll be getting an epic tattoo in your memory. I’ll love you always Jamo.”

In memory of Mr Callahan’s life, a gathering has been organised at Stockton Break Wall on Sunday, November 24 at 8pm for people to pay their respects.

“The recent passing of our friend has made me realise how short life can actually be. Everyone stay safe and be nice to each other,” one friend posted.

Another friend posted: “Jamesy my dear friend. Like my pop, you’ve showed me so much about fishing and wildlife, how not to be scared of them and how to handle them properly. “This wasn’t your time at all … There’s so many people who love and miss you jamesy forever 22.”

Some community members reacted to the tragic news with anger.

“A young, beautiful life taken senselessly and for what purpose,” a person commented on social media.

“So sad, a young man just finishing work and having a word to say,” another said.

North Lambton man Jason Talbot, 27, and Alivia Muriel Briggs, 33, have been charged over his alleged murder.

Police described the events as “shocking” and “distressing” and said the 22-year-old had gone to Beaumont St to have a meal after finishing work that morning.

Police allege he “simply made a comment” to a group of people about littering before he was attacked.

Mr Callahan suffered significant wounds and died as a result of his injuries.

A “live investigation” is still in force as Strike Force Mannum detectives continue to review CCTV and footage taken of the alleged attack.

Anyone with further information or video relevant to the case has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
