Harrowing mobile phone footage has shown a young man’s final moments before he was fatally stabbed in Newcastle.
A woman can be heard yelling “bash that c--ksucker” as she runs in to assault the 22-year-old man, who was also being attacked by up to four other men, in the shocking video.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Beaumont and Lindsay streets, in the Newcastle suburb of Hamilton, about 2.40am on Sunday following reports of a stabbing.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated a 22-year-old local man before he was taken to hospital, where he later died.
Police established a crime scene and commenced an investigation, Strike Force Mannum, with the assistance of the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad.
Beaumont St remained closed between Tudor and Donald streets for much of the day Sunday as forensic police and detectives scoured the area for evidence.
Meanwhile disturbing video of the incident shows the young man being attacked by up to four men and a woman.
This masthead has chosen not to publish the complete video due to its graphic nature, instead showing the lead up to what appear to be the fatal blows.
In the video, the altercation starts on the footpath under the awning adjacent to the Australia Post office where a woman in white pants can be seen running into the fray and swinging a wild punch before it spills out onto the road.
Four men can be seen running in to assault the victim at different times.
At one point a bystander or friend of the victim tries to intervene but is chased away by one of the attackers who appears to be armed.
Another man in a white hoodie, black pants and a hat rushes over and stands over the victim on the ground and delivers a flurry of blows.
The victim manages to get back to his feet momentarily until the man who chased off the bystander runs past a final time and knocks him over before the group starts to flee towards Lindsay St.
Newcastle City Police District Commander Superintendent Kylie Endemi said officers spent the day on Sunday working hard to gather evidence and information that could identify the victim’s attackers.
“The circumstances of that young man’s movements are still subject to our investigation as are the circumstances that led to his death,” Supt Endemi told the media on Sunday.
“We know so far that a violent altercation did occur between this young man and a group of people.”
