Hunter Covid: Over 3000 new daily infections and two deaths active case count nears 14,000

The Lake Macquarie man and woman who were double vaxxed and had underlying health issues have died from Covid while the district records 3424 fresh cases as hospitalisations continue to rise.

Two Lake Macquarie people have died as the Hunter New England Health District recorded a further 3424 fresh daily Covid-19 cases and hospital admissions continue to rise.

The man and woman, both aged in their 60s, died in John Hunter Hospital. Both were double vaxxed and had underlying health conditions.

Health authorities said there were now 13,974 active across the Hunter New England Health District, up from 11,422 on Wednesday.

There were now 89 active cases being cared for in the district’s hospitals, up 18 from the previous day, while nine of those are in intensive care.

Five of the Hunter’s local government areas recorded over 200 fresh cases, with Newcastle (912), Lake Macquarie (866), Maitland (437), Port Stephens (345) and Cessnock (246) all reporting high numbers.

Singleton (66), Dungog (26), Upper Hunter (23) and Muswellbrook (19) also recorded fresh cases.

There are now over 11,000 people infected with Covid-19 across the Hunter New England Health District after authorities reported nearly 3000 fresh cases overnight.

However, the surge in numbers has not correlated with hospitalisations, with Hunter New England Health statistics revealing there is now 71 active cases being cared for in hospitals, one more than on Tuesday.

And there are five people in intensive care compared to six on Tuesday.

The official daily figure across the district was 2961, including 2352 across the Hunter.

The official active case count is now 11,422.

The Newcastle local government area recorded 704 fresh cases, with Lake Macquarie (684), Maitland (450), Port Stephens (223), Cessnock (135), Singleton (97), Muswellbrook (22), Dungog (19) and Upper Hunter (18) all recording new infections.

Across NSW, there were eight deaths and 35-054 fresh cases reported.

There are now 1491 active cases being cared for in NSW hospitals, including 119 in intensive care.
