The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

Police have recovered a second body from inside a submerged car near a Port Stephens boat ramp.

Port Stephens-Hunter police initially reported the discovery of an elderly man’s body inside the white hatchback after it was found submerged near the Soldiers Point boat ramp about 4.30am.

A recovery operation commenced before the body of an elderly woman was also discovered inside the vehicle.

A crime scene had been set up during the recovery operation and investigations continue into whether the deaths were accidental, possibly due to disorientation.

A cause of death for either person will not be known until an autopsy later in the week.

Their identities have also not been confirmed, however it is believed the bodies belong to a 77-year-old man and 74-year-old woman.

The Soldier Point boat ramp will be closed until late on Sunday afternoon due to the operation.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
